The role of traction in membrane curvature generation.
Curvature of biological membranes can be generated by a variety of molecular mechanisms including protein scaffolding, compositional heterogeneity, and cytoskeletal forces. These mechanisms have the net effect of generating tractions (force per unit length) on the bilayer that are translated into distinct shapes of the membrane. Here, we demonstrate how the local shape of the membrane can be used to infer the traction acting locally on the membrane. We show that buds and tubes, two common membrane deformations studied in trafficking processes, have different traction distributions along the membrane and that these tractions are specific to the molecular mechanism used to generate these shapes. Furthermore, we show that the magnitude of an axial force applied to the membrane as well as that of an effective line tension can be calculated from these tractions. Finally, we consider the sensitivity of these quantities with respect to uncertainties in material properties and follow with a discussion on sources of uncertainty in membrane shape
Are migraineur women really more vulnerable to stress and less able to cope?
Abstract Background In this study, we aimed to investigate the differences between a sample of migraineurs and non-migraineurs with regard to their stress symptoms, tendency to stress, coping styles and life satisfaction. Methods This study was carried out on a migraineur group (n = 62, mean age: 37.5 ± 11.3, range: 18 to 61 years) and a non-migraineur group (n = 58, mean age: 32.0 ± 11.2, range: 18 to 61 years). Stress Audit (Symptoms), Stress Audit (Vulnerability), Turkish version of Ways of Coping Inventory Scales and Life Satisfaction were applied to the migraineur and non-migraineur groups. Results No significant differences were found between the groups in the scores of the stress symptoms except in the sub scores of the sympathetic system. There was no significant difference between the groups in the tendency to stress and life satisfaction (p > .05). For scores of the coping styles, the mean scores of the seeking social support subscale was higher in the control group than that of the migraineur group. However, migraineur women had higher mean scores in the submissive and the optimistic subscales. Conclusion We consider that, these outcomes may emphasize the necessity to be careful when using negative expressions about stress relating to migraineurs. Further comprehensive studies are required considering the multiple triggers of the disease in various cultural contexts.</p
Decrease of upper critical field with underdoping in cuprate superconductors
The transition temperature Tc of cuprate superconductors falls when the
doping p is reduced below a certain optimal value. It is unclear whether this
fall is due to strong phase fluctuations or to a decrease in the pairing gap.
Different interpretations of photoemission data disagree on the evolution of
the pairing gap and different estimates of the upper critical field Hc2 are in
sharp contradiction. Here we resolve this contradiction by showing that
superconducting fluctuations in the underdoped cuprate Eu-LSCO, measured via
the Nernst effect, have a characteristic field scale that falls with
underdoping. The critical field Hc2 dips at p = 0.11, showing that
superconductivity is weak where stripe order is strong. In the archetypal
cuprate superconductor YBCO, Hc2 extracted from other measurements has the same
doping dependence, also with a minimum at p = 0.11, again where stripe order is
present. We conclude that competing states such as stripe order weaken
superconductivity and this, rather than phase fluctuations, causes Tc to fall
as cuprates become underdoped.Comment: Supplementary Information file available upon request; Nature Physics

Cardiovascular responses to cognitive stress in patients with migraine and tension-type headache

Abstract

Background

The purpose of this study was to investigate the temporal relationship between autonomic changes and pain activation in migraine and tension-type headache induced by stress in a model relevant for everyday office-work.

Methods

We measured pain, blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) and skin blood flow (BF) during and after controlled low-grade cognitive stress in 22 migraineurs during headache-free periods, 18 patients with tension-type headache (TTH) and 44 healthy controls. The stress lasted for one hour and was followed by 30 minutes of relaxation.

Results

Cardiovascular responses to cognitive stress in migraine did not differ from those in control subjects. In TTH patients HR was maintained during stress, whereas it decreased for migraineurs and controls. A trend towards a delayed systolic BP response during stress was also observed in TTH. Finger BF recovery was delayed after stress and stress-induced pain was associated with less vasoconstriction in TTH during recovery.

Conclusion

It is hypothesized that TTH patients have different stress adaptive mechanisms than controls and migraineurs, involving delayed cardiovascular adaptation and reduced pain control system inhibition.</p
